MRPC’s Dr. Solomon Njenga Weighs in on Electoral Security and Democratic Participation During KTN Special

On 16 July 2026, MRPC Director of Research and Programmes, Dr. Solomon Njenga, featured as a governance, peace and security expert on KTN’s Ol Kalou Decides programme, where he provided analysis on the implications of the ongoing Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

Contributing to a national discussion on electoral stability and democratic governance, Dr. Njenga reflected on the heightened security environment surrounding the by-election, noting the importance of safeguarding both public order and citizens’ democratic freedoms. He observed that while security remains a critical component of credible electoral processes, elections should fundamentally remain civilian-led exercises that allow citizens to freely exercise their constitutional rights.

Commenting on the situation, Dr. Njenga stated:

“We are militarising the polling stations and the elections. While it is good to have security, elections are an expression of free will, and everyone should be allowed to do what they want to do.”

His remarks highlighted the need to balance security considerations with democratic principles, particularly in electoral contexts where tensions may undermine public confidence and participation.

MRPC remains committed to advancing evidence-based dialogue on governance, conflict prevention, electoral peace, and democratic resilience as part of its broader work on conflict trends, strategic foresight, and peace and security across Greater Eastern Africa.
