Today, 8 September 2026, Mashariki Research and Policy Centre (MRPC) participated in the panel discussion on “Preventing Violent Extremism in Climate-Affected Fragile Settings,” held at Mövenpick Nairobi Hotel and co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Germany, together with the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF).

The dialogue brought together policymakers, practitioners, civil society organisations and climate-security actors from across East Africa to examine how climate vulnerability, livelihood disruption, displacement, fragility and insecurity can interact to create conditions that may increase vulnerability to violent extremism.

Dr Njenga Solomon, Director of Research and Programmes at MRPC, participated as a panelist, contributing to the discussion on prevention, community resilience and conflict-sensitive climate action, with particular attention to the practical application of the Nairobi Toolkit on Addressing the Nexus Between Climate Change and Violent Extremism Conducive to Terrorism.

The engagement reflects MRPC’s continued contribution to evidence-informed policy dialogue on the interconnected challenges of climate, peace and security across Eastern Africa, and to advancing locally grounded approaches to resilience and prevention.
